Commemorating 20 years of cooperation between the EAC and Germany
The GIZ-EAC Programme is looking back at 20 years of shared history. 20 Years – 20 Faces – 20 Results is a picture exhibition at the headquarters of the EAC showcasing and illustrating the cooperation between the East African Community and Germany and the progress it brought for East African citizens. A timeline on the floor, starting in 1998 and ending in 2018, connects memorable events and milestones of 20 years of cooperation to the views and opinions of contemporary citizens of East Africa. The exhibition invites everyone to look into the lives of citizens and their personal experiences of regional integration.
2018 marks the 20th anniversary of development cooperation between the EAC and Germany. From humble beginnings with just one advisor supporting the EAC Permanent Tripartite Commission, the cooperation developed into a major programme with now well over 30 staff members, most of them regional experts from across the EAC Partner States. Dr. Kirsten Focken, the programme manager of the GIZ-EAC Programme states that the fact that EAC and Germany can look back at a history of 20 shared years of cooperation shows that the integration process made good progress and produced tangible results. While looking back into the past of the cooperation, the future is being discussed as well. The recent government negotiations between the two parties reconfirmed the long-standing partnership through new commitments amounting to 61.5 million Euros. The German Ambassador Dr. Detlef Wächter, Mr Niels Breyer, Head of the Division East Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Germany and the Secretary General of the EAC, Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko, jointly inaugurated the exhibition.
The picture exhibition was curated by Gadi Ramadhani, a young and upcoming artist from Dar es Salaam and is shown in the main hall of the EAC Headquarters at Arusha. It will be open until 26 October 2018.
